In the summer of 2025, I interned at Night Owl Gallery, a small business based in the Station North Arts District of Baltimore, MD. The main project I worked on during this internship was the branding for EROScape, an erotic art exhibition supplemented with a series of events and community programming. The branding package included a logo, a wordmark, fonts, colors, flyers, stickers, linoleum blocks (used on eye masks), and a vinyl cutter-prepared file.

The branding was inspired by shibari rope-tying techniques from Japan, an erotic form of bondage that focuses on the contours of a body. The main reason I was drawn to this art form was the programming for EROScape, which included erotic live drawing workshops that focused on shibari and kinbaku styles of art, and technique workshops where people could directly learn rope-tying styles from experts. The texture of the logo was further drawn from the texture of dry brushstrokes and charcoal on paper, to further visually align with the art exhibition and workshops held during the month-long show.

I tried to ensure that while the final logo would appear to be textural, it was based on strong circular grids that were tweaked a little bit to better fit with the proportions of a body. These circles would be interrupted by strong angular lines to add to the visual interest of the shape, with the letters within the logo undergoing a certain degree of modification as well – a choice that intentionally focused less on the legibility and more on the aesthetics. The logo would eventually become abstracted and not as legible, and thus, the wordmark paired with it would explain the name of the show instead. As expected, many viewers noticed the word within the shape quickly and were pleasantly surprised by their discovery.

While not featured as images within this page, my roles within the gallery also included inventory management, marketing, and talent acquisition for the first time. I’ve also learned how to find talent for performances and who to contact for live music, dance, drag, or burlesque. I’ve also learned how to prepare a space for an art market and how to support artists who might wish to sell, while being very specific to ensure clarity about logistical problems that may arise in the process.
