This newspaper is meant to be an object existing within a fictional piece of media, and the overall typography is supposed to fit the period and themes of the world the newspaper is set in. We were asked to design the front page, and accordingly had to choose headlines, ads and other relevant data that would be important and enticing enough to ensure people would pick it up from a rack and flip through it. I chose Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books as the universe I wished to set this paper in. I chose the time period between Sherlock Holmes’ “death” and “return”. Most of the articles are picked from this time period in the books.
The visual language is inspired by early 20th century newspapers, and most of the ads were chosen from that era. I also used the official illustrations by Sidney Paget to maintain a sense of uniformity. I created elements based on the blackletter font used in the title, and used guns, knives and poison bottles to create the logoform.
