The Great
Gatsby
The goal for this project was to choose a movie and create a poster for it. While we could choose to include illustrations, photographic elements and other visual supplements, the goal was to build an understanding of basic typographic hierarchy utilised in such posters. Since these posters include a lot of information, the goal was to understand the importance behind all of that, and ensure there was enough variation while still maintaining legibility. The focus was placed on : the title, release data, the main cast, and the main crew. The typeface had to be chosen based on the period as well as the themes of this movie.
I chose the Great Gatsby, since it had a lot of visual cues that could help me make these decisions much easily. With a focus on gold as a symbol of wealth, the usage of devices such as the car, the eyes of doctor T.J. Eckleburg, the green light across the lake and the fashion and design choices of the era really helped me pair visual elements outside of the typography within the poster. The fonts were also chosen to fit the 20s, not just including art deco, but also display fonts that alluded to the wealth and luxury associated with the characters in the plot.
