Eixample Display is a typeface built to complement ITC Barcelona, originally designed by Ed Benguiat in 1981. This typeface was created within 10 days as a product of a Type Design Intensive Residency, a collaboration between MICA and WeType.
The Eixample is a district of Barcelona, constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its designer, Ildefons Cerdà, proposed this neighborhood as a part of the planned urban expansion of Barcelona in the 1860s and beyond.
Eixample Display, inspired by Cerdà’s philosophy, aims to ‘expand’ ITC Barcelona. Similarly, all Type Specimens on this webpage showcase a combination of both fonts to further highlight the harmony of this type pairing.
